Localisation : Situated at 500m on the hillside just east of the medieval city towards Saint-Christophe des Bardes (D243 E1), Château Haut-Sarpe - Saint-Émilion Classified Growth is well worth the detour ! The Joseph Janoueix family is one of the oldest wine houses in the Libourne area, and they are as well-known as producers as they are merchants. Set in the hillside on the edge of the chalky plateau, this is one of the oldest and most reputable vineyards in Saint-Émilion, with 21 hectares of vines.
The grape varieties are 70% merlot, selected for its fullness and 30% cabernet franc, for its elegance. Harvesting is done as in olden times: hnd-picked and hand selected. The wine is aged for 18 months in new oak barrels. Before tasting this Saint-Émilion classified growth, the visit will take you back in time to the atmosphere of bygone days in which Jean-François Janoueix brings the tiny hamlet of Haut-Sarpe to life.
The château is protected by a magnificent iron gate flanked by two lions, the central edifice built according to plans drawn up Léo Drouyn and influenced by those of the Trianon in Versailles. You'll find an eco-museum and a picturesque village of harvesters where you'll discover the main vestige of this rural outpost, the "savoir-fer" and open to artists. There is also the flour mill museum with the only remaining 18th century restored windmill in Saint-Émilion. Not forgetting the "glouglou" hervesters'50's style discotheque-cabaret; workshops for artists, the fountain and its stone wash place, cars from 1922 and 1929 and a rose garden with hundreds of birds.
The pilgrims on route to Saint-Jacques de Compostelle can also dine and sleep in the gîte (guest house) the "Maison des Pèlerins", (Pilgrims' House).
